WHY CHOOSE ME FOR COUNSELLING

I understand that it is a difficult decision to seek help from a Counsellor and that counselling may not be for everyone, but I believe that it is always worth giving yourself the best chance of resolving matters before they cause irreparable damage to your relationship. Sometimes we need a little help in resolving our problems from an unbiased outsider with the qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience to help us on our way.

Psychosexual (Sex) Therapy is very much Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) based and is an intensive program of work which incorporates CBT based work and couples counselling combined.

There is also an element of intensive work to be completed at home by the client in-between sessions. This therapy should only be delivered by a fully trained therapist in this area. I have completed a Post Graduate Diploma in this area of therapy and have many years experience of practice working at Relate and in private practice.

Research demonstrates that relationship and environmental factors have an important part to play within cases of sexual dysfunction and that, where possible, the therapist should work with the couple, rather than the individual, as this has proved much more beneficial.

Of course there are occasions when an individual has a dysfunction and they are not in a relationship. On these occasions, it is still possible to work with individuals; so please do not hesitate to ask about the interventions that are available.

The kinds of issues that lead people to contact a sex therapist are wide ranging; and some of these are listed below;

Erectile Problems... which may be an inability to get an erection at all; or a difficulty in sustaining an erection before or during penetration.

Premature Ejaculation … relates to ejaculation before you would like to - sometimes prior to intercourse, and sometimes upon penetration and the feeling that you have no control or choice when ejaculation happens.

Inhibited Ejaculation … ranges from being totally unable to ejaculate in any situation, to being able to ejaculate only with masturbation.

Loss of Desire... An increasing number of people are reporting a loss of desire for sex. This can be a result of stress, busy lifestyle, sexual boredom and childbirth. In addition, some medication can badly affect libido. Problems in the general relationship can also cause a loss of interest in sex; and once the relationship issues are addressed, the sexual desire usually returns.

Vaginismus… inability to have sexual intercourse because the muscles at the entrance to the vagina go into an involuntary spasm when penetration is attempted. This then makes penetration painful and impossible. This is a very common problem that many women refrain from getting help with, due to their embarrassment or fear.

Dysparunia (painful intercourse)… pain during intercourse can be caused by many things. Because of the pain, a cycle can be set up whereby fear of pain causes anxiety and tension that in turn leads to more pain. Painful intercourse can also lead to loss of desire.

Anorgasmia (unable to reach orgasm) for some people, the inability to reach orgasm is always there, whether it's during intercourse or masturbation. For other people, orgasm doesn't happen during sexual intercourse, but is achieved through masturbation. There are many causes, ranging from lack of knowledge about how the body works, to anxiety and an inability to "let go" and allow orgasm to happen.

Sexual Problems and Ageing

As we age our bodies start to change, both internally and externally. Men can suffer from erectile dysfunction due to an underlying medical condition or because of a prescribed medication they are taking. Women can suffer from vaginal dryness, during and post menopause.

Arthritis or other conditions which cause pain and restrict mobility can impact on people, as can prescribed medications that affect libido.

People’s attitudes and beliefs about age and sexuality linked in with poor body image and low self esteem and depression can also be detrimental.

Sexual Problems following Illness and Disability

As discussed, many illnesses and prescribed medications can have an impact on sexual functioning and desire.

Other illnesses such as Parkinson’s or Cancer and can greatly impact on someone’s sexuality, self esteem and sexual function.

Other people suffer spinal injuries and may have to re- adapt to a different way of life and address the direct physical, psychological and medicinal effects associated with the condition.

All of the above problems can be greatly helped with sex therapy, and whatever your problem, it will be dealt with sensitively. As well as discussing the difficulties, I will formulate a programme of exercises for you to do in the privacy of your own home.
