WHY CHOOSE ME FOR COUNSELLING

I am Relate trained with several years experience working for Relate as a Couples Counsellor, Relationship Therapist and as a specialist Psychosexual (Sex) Therapist. I am qualified to Post Graduate Diploma level both as a Relationship Counsellor and Psychosexual (Sex) Therapist with experience to date working at Relate, the NHS Substance Misuse team, a Local Authority Domestic Violence team and in my own private practice.

I always strive to improve my practice and will attend numerous continuous professional development events each year. This year to date I have attended the annual Sex Addiction Conference in London on January the 26th 2019. This gave me the opportunity to listen to guest speakers, attend workshops and network with fellow Professional Psychosexual Therapists. This invaluable continuous professional development event will without doubt enable me to further improve my practice with my sex and porn addiction clients. I have also attended a 4 day course in Newcastle which equips me to specialise in working with elderly couples where domestic abuse is prevalent in the relationship. I attended a course specialising in working with clients who have experienced severe trauma either as a child or adult in February this year and have also attended a COSRT approved course relating to sex after sexual trauma. This course focused on ensuring the Counsellor was able to understand the effects of sexual abuse and rape in childhood or as an adult on someone's mind and body and how to effectively work with the client to assist them to overcome any sexual problems they were having in a relationship. I have also recently attended a course on working effectively with people from the LGBT community where domestic abuse is prevalent.

I am a registered member of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) and you can access my profile and registration number via the link on my sidebar of this page. I am a registered and fully qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist and have Professional Indemnity Insurance. I undertake supervision on a monthly basis and attend regular Continuous Professional Development(CPD) courses each year. This enables me to further my knowledge and continue to improve my practice.

I have worked for Relate in East Yorkshire for several years practicing as a Relationship and Couples Counsellor and a Psychosexual (Sex) Therapist. I also delivered therapy to patients referred by their GP for anxiety, depression and panic attacks.

I also worked for the NHS for ten years until 2014 for the Community Mental Health Team, but specialising as a Senior Practitioner within the Substance Misuse Team working therapeutically with patients presenting with alcohol and substance misuse addictions.
I implemented Behavioural Couples Therapy and delivered it to patients whilst working in this team.

It was whilst working for the Substance Misuse Team that I learnt and developed my practice working with patients to address their addictions to illicit drugs, prescribed drugs and to alcohol. This decade of experience coupled with ongoing Professional Development and a Post Graduate Diploma from Hull University in Psychosexual Therapy gave me an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the route causes of addiction and the theories, tools, strategies and therapeutic skills to help people to overcome addictive behaviours. I now use my knowledge to assist many clients who present with sex addiction and porn addiction problems.

I hold a Diploma in Drug and Alcohol Counselling and I am qualified to deliver Behavioural Couples Therapy as recognised in NICE Guidelines and used within the NHS to address drug and alcohol problems within relationships. I am a practitioner in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which is very effective in treating anxiety and depression.

At present I have a contract with a Local Authority employed as an Independent Domestic Violence Advocate ( IDVA ). I work within a multi-agency environment, but focus on ensuring the safety of high risk domestic abuse/violence clients and any children where applicable.
